Barbara Mahany "Reading the Book of Nature: Are We Missing the Whole (and the Holy) of God’s First Sacred Text?" @ Winebrenner Theological Seminary, TLB Auditorium

2023 Debow and Catherine Freed Contemporary Christian Lecture Series Event

The Book of Nature is an ancient and timeless theology embraced by sacred traditions the world over. Metaphorical in name, it holds that creation, the kaleidoscope of heaven and earth and all in between, is God’s first sacred text, spelled out in the alphabet letters of every leaf on every tree, in the sound and silence of every creaturely utterance, unfurled from the tiniest of caterpillars to the dome of heaven through which the planets whirl. For thousands of years, it’s been seen as a lens through which to catch a glimpse of the Creator, a volume that came into focus long before words were inscribed in the Bible.

Yet it’s a text too long ignored, and it’s time to open its pages. Here on this imperiled globe, it’s not just nature that’s being trampled, but our very relationship with the Divine. If we can once again learn to read the text that is nature––to deep read in the very way we engage with any sacred text––to expose ourselves not just to its aesthetic wonders but to its role as a place of encounter with the sacred, we might comprehend more profoundly the insistent need to save this holy earth under siege. And we might well find ourselves embraced by a God as present as the stars that salt the night sky, and the birdsong that heralds the dawn. For what are we waiting?

Regina Holiday: Health Equity – I Can Make a Difference Event @ Davis Street Building, Room # 2225
Apr 11 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Families and patients define their healthcare quality, safety, and overall experience as emotional, while healthcare providers define the experience as biological health. Rev. Regina Holliday seeks to close that gap to co-design outcomes and experiences and create humanism in healthcare. She is a patient advocate and artist known for painting murals depicting the need for clarity and transparency in medical records and to reform health care standards. This advocacy mission was inspired by her husband and his struggle to get appropriate health care. He suffered poor care coordination, a lack of access to data, and a series of medical errors, ultimately losing his battle and his life. Holliday’s husband’s death inspired her to create change needed to drive better patient outcomes and communication for patient and families. Join her in conversation at University of Findlay for her presentation, “Health Equity and Reconciliation,” as we delve into a discussion around how to be a better advocate for patients and families and live-streamed via Zoom (link: https://findlay.zoom.us/j/91335489305?pwd=S2Zjc1A5V08wSEc4aE9nUnRHdDhVZz09).
